When the state of Israel was created in 1948, fighting began in what was previously the British Mandate of Palestine. Hostilities between various Arab groups and the State of Israel grew into a series of Arab-Israeli wars that resulted in an armistice after each of the first two wars, which eventually culminated in a series of border skirmishes between Israel and the surrounding Arab states. The situation in Gaza has always been more complex than the situation in the West Bank due to several factors, including the tribal nature of the Palestinian society in the Gaza Strip, its remoteness from the West Bank, and the differing attitudes of the natives towards the two wars; most Palestinian leaders have come from the West Bank.
